Advantages and features of the BTR-80
The purpose of BTR-80 transporter is to transport troops and support them with an artillery attack during combat operations. The hull, made of armor steel with the thickness of the sheet up to 10 mm, is distinguished by its streamlined. This helps to improve the buoyancy of the carrier and its security. The armament of an APC BTR-80 includes KPVT (or 2A72) and PKT machine guns built on a mantlet of the turret, as well as a 1P3-2 type optical sight and night vision devices.
Control compartment in the front of the BTR-80 includes seats for the commander and the driver, radio equipment and other command tools, next comes the fighting compartment with the seats for gunners and other crew.
There is a side-opening horizontal-split door, which partly protects the paratroopers by landing. Consisted of 2 “wings”, it opens the upper “wing” to the side, and the lower one goes down and performs the function of the footboard for more convenient exit from the vehicle.
The BTR-80 carrier, which has the GAZ-5903 factory designation, practically does not differ in its construction and principle of operation from its predecessor, BTR-70. But with one difference — the manufacturer improved the powerful of the chassis and the engine. In 1986 it entered in service, then began mass production of the BTR-80. Currently, this combat vehicle is one of the most important and widespread APC’s in the army of Russian Federation and not only – it is actively exported and participates in many military operations.
There are many different modifications of the BTR-80, for example, some special purpose combat vehicles designed on its basis. On the latest models, there is common an installation of cannons and anti-tank missiles.
